Millions Of Chances To Make A Difference

It’s estimated that one million Canadians and ten million Americans have lymphedema.

That’s more than HIV, Parkinson’s, ALS, MS and Alzheimers combined!

Lymphedema isn’t rare, but it’s often mislabeled, misunderstood, and left out of university courses and practicums.

This needs to change.

Here’s a true story from my early years of practice.

As a RD focused on nutrition for cancer treatment and prevention, I used to encounter many patients who were not educated about the lymphatic system and their risks after surgery and lymph node removal.

I missed my opportunity. I could have told them that they have a life-long risk of lymphedema and how to reduce their chances of developing lymphedema.

When they mentioned they had swelling in their limb, I didn’t pick up on it or refer them to a lymphedema therapist. When they told me they had lymphedema, I assumed it didn’t affect what we were doing nutritionally. I could have helped them slow the progression of their disease, but I didn’t know how.

What is sad about this is that many of my cancer patients tell me that lymphedema is worse than cancer. I was putting all my attention on helping them with their cancer nutrition and totally ignoring the issue that was having the biggest impact on their quality of life and their mental and physical health.

Since then, I’ve made it my mission to become an expert in evidence-based nutrition for lymphedema. I even co-wrote the book The Complete Lymphedema Management and Nutrition Guide with a respected lymphedema therapist to bring awareness to patients and practitioners alike.

Like me, you probably got into your profession to help people and relieve suffering.

Given the emerging research supporting the role of nutrition in lymphedema and the documented negative impacts lymphedema has on people's lives…we need to do what we can now to help. Speaking personally, working with my 1:1 clients and my Lymphedema Nutrition School students has been incredibly rewarding. They are so grateful for my help as many have been struggling, without a diagnosis, without a way forward, and with no idea that nutrition can help as much as it can. It is truly gratifying work. I am grateful every day that I get to continue it.

"Jean provides research based information instead of just perpetuating the same old myths about lymphedema.

Often patients receive conflicting or vague information from various sources regarding the treatment of lymphedema with nutrition. It was obvious Jean's information was heavily based on research and it was encouraging new information and testing."

- Loren

"I participated in the Lymphedema Nutrition School last fall. It was so helpful. I highly recommend any training with Jean LaMantia on Lymphedema."

- Pam

"Very informative, dynamic, relevant information shared on this challenging subject."
