Living with lymphedema can feel overwhelming.
Let’s just say it—lymphedema sucks.
I hear you and I can help, especially If you:
- Are worried your lymphedema may get worse
- Feel overwhelmed and unsure what to do
- Have heard conflicting advice about what to eat
- Feel like you’ve been left to manage this on your own
- Are frustrated after cancer treatment to now be dealing with lymphedema
You’re not alone
As much as I wish I could, I can’t take away your lymphedema.
But I can offer you clear, evidence-informed strategies to help you manage it.
I’m Jean LaMantia
Registered Dietitian, Author, Lymph Node Cancer Survivor & Creator of the Lymphedema Nutrition Program
If you’re like many of my clients, you suspect that diet plays a role in your lymphedema — but your doctors don’t know much about it.
As a registered dietitian and lymphedema nutrition expert, I’m happy to tell you you’re right.
Research and my own clinical experience show:
What you eat matters for lymphedema.
Evidence-informed changes to your diet and lifestyle may help:
Support a healthy inflammatory response
Support immune function
Reduce strain on the lymphatic system
Address factors such as body weight that may influence risk and symptoms
Support the gut–lymphatic connection
Identify and manage your individual triggers
All without radical diets or a drastic life overhaul.
Just realistic, practical changes that you can apply and build on over time.

“Lymphedema Nutrition School has been life changing for me. I was sitting in the middle of the forest and couldn’t see the pathway. You have lit up the pathway so that I can find my way out. I have to do it, and with the awareness you and the group are sharing, I finally have the hope that I can see the clearing.”
- Marg M.
“I particularly like how she explains in layman’s terms how our bodies work and her approach in encouraging us to watch our own bodies and learn from what is happening.”
- Michelle D.
“At first I was thinking, “What?! No eating plan?” And now, I’m just so grateful. Because you give us all the tools to make empowered choices.”
- Joy T.
“With a complete, comprehensive approach to many aspects of nutrition, Jean guided us to a path of learning, understanding, watching/feeling our individual bodies and making choices/decisions that work for me.”
- Nancy A.
Why I Focus on Lymphedema
I’m Jean LaMantia, Registered Dietitian, author, and cancer survivor.
My work is focused on helping individuals better understand how nutrition may influence lymphedema—using an evidence-informed, practical approach.
My interest in the lymphatic system is both professional and personal.
In my late 20s, I developed lymphoma and before I could receive my treatment, my lungs began filling with lymphatic fluid. I felt like I was drowning in my own body.
That experience gave me a deep appreciation for how important—and how vulnerable—the lymphatic system can be when it’s not functioning well.
While I recovered without developing lymphedema, that experience has stayed with me and continues to shape my work.
My Background in Lymphedema Nutrition
- Registered Dietitian, registered in Canada and the United States
- Co-author of The Complete Lymphedema Management and Nutrition Guide (2nd Edition)
- Author of Complementary Therapies for Lymphedema

- Contributor to Pathways (Canadian Lymphedema Framework)
- Presenter for national and international organizations including the National Lymphedema Network (US), Canadian Lymphedema Framework, International Lymphedema Framework, Power Lymphatics and the American Vein and Lymphatic Association
Presenter for organizations across the lymphedema, lipedema, and cancer communities, including:
